Private equity refers to investments in non-listed companies where a distinction is made between the phases of venture capital (start-ups), growth capital (growth financing), and buyouts (investments in more mature companies). Specialties include mezzanine financing (debt financing) as well as distressed /turnarounds (investments in defaulting companies).
